from the river to the riverbookmark

We’ve made bookmarks from the major lakes of the world.
The rivers running into and out of these lakes are expressed with the string of the bookmark.

Using an original pattern and lens with silk printing 3D printing technology, the deeper the water is, the more it appears to plunge.

CASPIAN SEA

CASPIAN SEA

A saltwater lake that extends widely over Central Asia. Has approximately the same area as Japan. Since it has the characteristics of both ocean and lake, it’s both the smallest sea in the world and the largest lake. The shores centering on Baku on the west coast are a major oil-producing region.

ARAL SEA

ARAL SEA

A saltwater lake that straddles Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. It was once the fourth largest in the world in terms of area, but has shrunk rapidly since 1960 with the irrigation and canal construction of the 1940s. The saline concentration has risen and many of the creatures inhabiting the area have perished; the fishing industry, including the caviar industry, is ruined, and is in danger of being wiped out.

GREAT LAKES

GREAT LAKES

A term that is inclusive of the five lakes that mark the border of Canada and the Unites States of America. Boasts the largest area in the world outside saltwater lakes. The Great Lakes and the Saint Lawrence River water system are the largest freshwater water system in the world, and are also called “the inland sea”. Around the lakes is one of the leading industrial areas; Chicago, Detroit and other such industrial cities are dotted around the lakes.

LAKE TANGANYIKA

LAKE TANGANYIKA

A freshwater lake at the western end of Tanzania. 773 meters above sea level, it is long and narrow, stretching 40km from east to west and 650km from north to south. It is 1,471m at its deepest point, making it the second deepest in the world. It is an ancient lake. Owing to its depth, the deepwater layer has no current, and has become a dysoxic body of water called “fossil water”.

LAKE VICTORIA

LAKE VICTORIA

The largest lake in Africa, surrounded by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. A mainstream of the Nile River. Surrounded by the Great Rift Valley, which is said to have begun when the earth’s surface experienced an upheaval 10,000,000 ~ 5,000,000 years ago; it is also said that its shape results from this. Many indigenous species evolve here, and it is famous as “Darwin’s miniature garden”.

LAKE BAIKAL

LAKE BAIKAL

The clearest lake in the world. It is a world heritage. It has the largest area of all lakes in Asia and is the deepest lake in the world. It is also the oldest ancient lake in the world, having a history of 25,000,000 years. Of the abundance of more than 2,500 species of living things that have been verified, approximately 70% are indigenous species that throughout its long history have evolved uniquely within the lake.
